Jay C. Townsend, 83, of Scottsville, passed away Wednesday night, May 14, 2014, at Envoy at the Village in Fork Union. He was born on August 26, 1930, in Valle Crucis, North Carolina, a son of the late Wilson Arlando and Ora Lee (Hodges) Townsend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine brothers; and two sisters.
Mr. Townsend was a retired machinist, having worked for a number of years at the Richmond Foundry and Coyne and Delaney. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Charlottesville; a member of the former Scottsville Ruritan Club; the Republican Party of Fluvanna County; and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen (Hardy) Townsend of Scottsville; two sons, Brent Ashley Townsend and Patrick Neal Townsend, both of Scottsville; three grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, and Siobhan Townsend; two sisters-in-law, Velma Townsend of Scottsville, and Betty Kelly-Townsend of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; and a number of extended family and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2975 Hydraulic Road, Charlottesville, with Bishop Aaron Hancock officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Scottsville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday evening, May 16, 2014, at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home. Family and friends may share memories and photos at the Thacker Brothers website.
