Sarah Kelly and Linda Bradshaw attended the 2015 Ruritan National Summer Leadership Conference June 18-20 at the New River Community College in Dublin, VA. While they were there, they learned about new programs to improve America’s communities and revitalize the community service organization.

The conference was sponsored by the Ruritan National Office in Dublin, VA. as part of the organization’s ongoing training program for volunteer leaders.

Sarah is a member of the Stonewall District Ruritan Club in Winchester, and is the National Director of the Rapidan and Rockingham Districts.

Linda is a member of the Lignum Ruritan Club in Culpeper and is the Rapidan District’s Governor and Publicity Chair.

Attendees of the conference included Ruritan District Governors, Lt. Governors and Area Governors from Districts and Areas across 25 states, as well as other District leaders along with a host of volunteer speakers and seminar leaders.

At the conference, participants also met with national volunteer leaders and Ruritan staff members to discuss current issues and activities that affect Ruritan clubs and Ruritan members in their districts and areas. Some of the topics discussed included growth and development, leadership training, publicity, the Ruritan Foundation, and legal issues.

Conference participants represented 28,000 Ruritan members in over 40 Ruritan Districts and Areas that reach from the tidewater area of Virginia to the corn belts of Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska.

From the Desk of Lt. Governor and Publicity Chairperson of the Rapidan District:

Ten months ago today, the Rapidan District went “online” with a temporary, unofficial website and associated Facebook page to “test the waters” to see if such a website would be of value to Ruritans. As of this writing on December 3, 2014, 1:57 pm there have been 5166 “hits” on that unofficial website.

On August 22, 2014, the “official” website (this one) went online and the content of the original website was copied over to this site. As of today, there have been 1842 “hits” on this new website. Combined, that is a total of 7008 “hits!” Not bad, if we say so ourselves!

We would like to thank our readers for coming to visit our website(s) and encourage everyone to sign up to be a “follower” of this official website. You can do so by entering your email in the “Follow this by email” text box in the right sidebar near the bottom of this website. By “following” (or subscribing) new posts will automatically appear in your email inbox. Doing this will give you the convenience of being able to keep up-to-date on what is going on without having to physically come to the website every few days to see what is going on! We would like to encourage our readers to “bookmark” or “save” this website and use this one to keep abreast of what is happening in the District.

We would like to discontinue using the original one in the near future. We have noticed, however, that the original one is continuing to be used frequently by our readers, so we will not be de-activating it until we are more confidant that people have become comfortable with coming to this new one instead of the old one. We have posted on the original website a notice urging the readers that arrive there to come to this website.

We would also like to take this opportunity to encourage all of the twenty-four local Ruritan Clubs in the Rapidan District to send us press releases and notices about their events and meetings before AND after they are held so we can help spread the word about our great clubs! This is a great opportunity to help promote awareness and increase attendance and membership in our clubs!

Publicity for Ruritan Clubs is welcome anywhere the clubs can get it!

Tip: If you are finished reading YOUR Ruritan Magazine, rather than throwing it away, use a black marker to “black-out” your personal information on the mailing label, and leave it in the reception/waiting area of a business! Someone is bound to pick it up and take a look – maybe the magazine will generate some more interest in Ruritan Clubs! This is free publicity for your local clubs!

From the Desk of the Lt. Governor:

CVTV (a local television station) in Spotsylvania County, VA, responded quickly to our request for a free PSA promoting Ruritan awareness by designing this video, and they will be airing it immediately. They have also offered to run free PSAs promoting our local Ruritan events in the future. This video directs viewers that are interested in more information to contact the National Ruritan office, and supplies their phone number and website address.

Hopefully this will help to increase membership rolls in our local Ruritan Clubs in their viewing area!

The video has also been posted on YouTube. You should be able to view it from this post, by clicking on the video at the top of this post.

Our heartfelt thanks to CVTV, for your help in our publicity campaign and getting the word out to our local communities about the Ruritan organization!
