Ryland Carter Watts, 95, of Palmyra, passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2017. He was born in Halifax County, Virginia, on December 18, 1921, the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Charles Howard Watts. Two sisters, Evangeline Hoyle of Raleigh, N.C., and Marion Turner of Richmond, Va., also predeceased him. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Evelyn Thomas Watts; one son, Charles Howard Watts II and wife, Rosemary Anzo, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and one grandson, Ryland Thomas Watts of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Elizabeth Hoyle of Troy, Va., and Virginia Ann “Pete” Wilkerson of Chase City, Va.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was a 1953 graduate of VPI, majoring in Agronomy, and later received his Masters Degree in Adult Education. Mr. Watts was County Extension Agent in Fluvanna for 20 years. After retirement, he served two terms on the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors, serving as Vice-Chairman and Chairman.

Among his years in Fluvanna County, he was a member of two Ruritan Clubs with 30 years perfect attendance. He served as an Elder in the Fork Union Presbyterian Church, Clerk of Session and as Trustee. Mr. Watts was a Scottish Rite Mason, Past Master of the Fork Union Masonic Lodge, a life member of the Fluvanna Volunteer Rescue Squad, an Emergency Medical Technician with the Fluvanna Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was a Defensive Driving Instructor for many years. He served in the Army during World War II in Europe and on his later graduation from VPI, majoring in Agronomy, practiced good forestry and wildlife management.

He will be greatly missed; he was a very civic minded individual and, in his unassuming way, benefited his fellowman in many ways.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at the Fork Union Presbyterian Church in Fork Union, Va., with Pastor Joseph S. Allmond C.R.E. officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. Masonic Rites will follow the service. Interment will be in the State Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Va., at 1 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2017.
