Milton Safley Smith, 88, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014. Born July 27, 1926, in Lynchburg, VA, he was the son of the late Joseph O. and Margaret Safley Smith. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by two brothers, Joseph O. Smith, Jr. and Douglas M. Smith and a sister, Theresa B. Robinson.

Milton served in the U.S. Navy in WWII during the Iwo Jima Conflict, and in the South Pacific. He worked for many years as a salesman and retired as a real estate agent. He also was a member of the Albemarle Ruritan Club and the Champ Lawson, Jr. VFW Post 2044.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Julia Cooke Smith, and two daughters, Linda K. Birch and Barbara S. Lundgren; two brothers, George F. Smith and his wife Erlyne and Robert D. Smith and his wife Polly. Four grandchildren also survive him; Keith Shifflett and his wife Whitney, Gary Shifflett, Brandon Birch and Jeff Shifflett; three great grandchildren; Hayley, Samantha and Trenton Shifflett. Two sisters-in-law also survive him; Revonda Smith and Lillie Mae Cooke. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 11:00am on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at First Christian Church with Mr. David Tyree officiating. Interment followed at Monticello Memory Gardens with military honors. The family received friends from 6:00 until 7:30pm on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
