James Stewart Fox, age 90, of Culpeper, Virginia, formerly of Fairfax, Virginia, passed away Friday, June 9, 2017 at The Jackson House in Boston, Virginia, surrounded by family. He was born September 26, 1926 in Fairfax, Virginia to James Moore Fox and Ethel McLean Fox. Stewart served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was one of the first paid firemen to be hired in Fairfax County in 1949. He then became the Captain of Company 3 and then the head of the Firemen’s Training Center until he retired in 1981.

Stewart was a devoted husband and a dedicated father. He was an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman.

Surviving Stewart are his children, Marie Fox of Culpeper, Anthony Fox and his wife, Donna, of Sumerduck, and Vernon Fox and his wife, Tracy, of Culpeper. Grandchildren, Kelly Thornton and her husband, Philip, Misty Jenkins and her husband, Eric, Rob Meyerson and his wife, Melissa, Steven Reynolds, David Reynolds and his wife, Amber, Ashley Palmer and her husband, Kevin, Blake Fox, Derek Fox, Connor Fox, Logan Fox and Noah Fox. Great grandchildren, Mason Thornton, Blakely Jenkins, Peyton Cooper, Samantha Meyerson, Sammy Palmer and Harley Reynolds.

In addition to his parents, Stewart was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Sue Fox and six brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 19, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, Virginia. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Clore-English Funeral Home with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, Virginia, with honors provided by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Captain Fox to the Firefighters’ Fund of Fairfax County, Box 401, Fairfax, Va. 22308-0401.
