Edwin O. “Jack” Gooch of Troy, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Born on August 30, 1921, in Troy, Virginia, he was the son of Octavius and Lola Gooch. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile Fizer; brother, Robert; and sisters, Calais Blevins and Jane Thomas. Jack is survived by his son, Steve and wife, Lissa; daughter, Cheryl and husband, David; and son, John and wife, Ann. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and innumerable nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and in-laws.
After serving as a navigator in the Eighth Air Force in World War II, Edwin received a B.S. from the University of Virginia. He also received a PhD. in geology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Jack strongly believed in community service and helping others. He served for many years on the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors, Fluvanna County School Board, and as a member of the Three Chopt Ruritan Club. Jack was an active member of Beaver Dam Church serving in many capacities including Sunday School Teacher and Deacon.
Most of all Jack loved being with his family.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014, at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Reverend Greg Wissinger officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Beaver Dam.
