The military veterans of the Fluvanna County Ruritan Club were honored July 21, 2015 at the Fluvanna County Ruritan’s July meeting in Palmyra, VA, by presenting them with certificates of appreciation from the Rapidan District Cabinet during a visit by the Rapidan District Governor, Linda Bradshaw. The presentation of the certificates is part of the Rapidan District’s plans to thank, appreciate, and honor all of their local club’s veterans. The Fluvanna County Ruritan Club honored the veterans further by presenting the veterans with a “veteran” tab that fastens to the back of their Ruritan membership lapel pin. The tab was presented by the Fluvanna County Ruritan Club’s president, Joseph Childress.

The veterans honored were Roman Bakke, Cary Beach, Joseph Childress, George Cobb, Richard Eaton, Emerson Farley Jr., George Goin, William Hitchcock, Burgess Jordan, and Bobby Shumake.

Two veterans were honored posthumous. They were William Grigg, and Robert L. Pulliam. Surviving relatives were on hand to receive those awards. William Grigg’s wife, Tammy, received the awards on his behalf. Robert Pulliam’s daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Roger Bowles received the awards on his behalf.

The Fluvanna County Ruritan Club participated in the first Fluvanna County Volunteer Fair March 21, 2015 at the Fluvanna County High School in Palmyra, VA. The Fluvanna County Leadership Development Program organized the Volunteer Fair. The free fair showcased forty-six non-profit organizations serving Fluvanna County Residents, providing an opportunity for local residents to learn more about services offered in Fluvanna County.

Fluvanna County Ruritan Club sent Burgess Jordan, Roman Bakke, George “Ty” Cobb, and Florence Bakke to represent the club at the fair. The members used this opportunity to get their name out to the community by setting up a table with an eye-catching display. They distributed informational Ruritan brochures and many “Ask a Ruritan Member about Ruritan!” booklets. Contact information stickers had been added to the booklets, to help interested people to remember how to contact the club. They kept busy speaking with prospective members and other interested parties.

“The fair did provide us with lots of exposure and ability to inform community members of what we do and why we do it!” reports Fluvanna County Ruritan Club Secretary Florence Bakke.
