Press Release by John Skelly, Publicity and Membership Chair of the Belmont Ruritan Club

The Belmont Ruritan Club hosted a visit and presentation by Colonel David Rowe, former Commander of the British Royal Marines Poole and Chief of Staff, Royal Marine Attache and Assistant Defense Attache in the British Embassy, Washington, DC and deputy Head of Mission to the United Nations in New York City at their monthly meeting on June 2, 2015 at the Belmont Community Center in Mineral VA.

After a brief review of his 41 years of military operations and Attache service, Col. Rowe delighted the members with an upbeat accounting of a formal visit by the Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and the Royal Family entourage to his Command Base some years ago. The accounting was done with great pride and interlaced with quite humorous anecdotes of what went wrong at the not-so-right times.

The Ruritan members showed the greatest of respect with a standing ovation for Col. Rowe for his presentation and in recognition of his numerous military encounters and patriotism to both of our countries.

Col. Rowe is a member of the Jefferson (VA) Ruritan Club, Jeffersonton, VA and is an active member of the Royal Marines Association, United States of America.

The Business meeting for the Belmont Ruritans included early planning for the 75th year celebration of the Belmont Horse Show (August 15th) and final plans for the annual Ruritan Yard Sale on June 20th 7AM-1PM at the Belmont Community Center, 7124 Belmont Road. The sale benefits scholarships along with many other community needs.

Press release contributed by John Skelly, of the Belmont Ruritan Club:

The Belmont Ruritan Club hosted William K.(Bill) Suter, Major General U.S. Army (Ret.) and more recently Clerk of the United States Supreme Court, (1991-2013) as their speaker for the January 6th meeting. Mr. Suter enthusiastically presented an overview of several precedent setting U.S. Supreme Court proceedings and decisions while offering perspectives on their continuing present day and more likely future impacts. Using anecdotes and humor intermixed with more serious comments, he stressed the importance for all citizens to understand the interactions and responsibilities between the three branches of our government. He concluded by urging all to work in concert to preserve the very basics of the U.S. Constitution and to assist in moving the nation forward following the will of the majority of our citizens. A short period of questions and answers followed.

The business meeting opened with the announcement of a major date change for the Annual Ham and Oyster Dinner as co-sponsored by the Ruritans and the Belmont Woman’s Club. The date for this year’s traditional and quite famous dinner was shifted to a later-spring date of Saturday, April 18th. In addition, the initial plans and committee formation for other major fund raising events including the 75th Belmont Horse Show, the summer “charity yard sale”, and the Scholarship Fund Raising Dinner were discussed. The Belmont Ruritan Club’s next meeting will be held February 3, 7:00 PM at the Belmont Community Center; the club is seeking new members on a routine basis.
