Greene County Ruritan Club – Farmers Market Likely Not Returning

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt of a story from the Greene County Record website – original story (May 10, 2016) can be found at this link: Farmers market likely not returning

BY TERRY BEIGIE Staff Writer (of Greene County Record)

After several decades, Greene County will not be kicking off the annual farmers market this summer.

Bob Burkholder, along with his wife, Joanne, has been the market manager for years under the Greene County Ruritan Club. “I’ve done it for 25 years or plus, so it’s time for somebody else to pick up the ball and go with it,” Burkholder said. “It’s going to take work on somebody else’s part.”

Burkholder, 78, who was one of the original farmers who formed the farmers market, said most of the other farmers have died.

“We have the buyers but we don’t have the vendor base anymore,” he said, noting that sometimes last year there were just two vendors at the market at the Greene County Technical Education Center.

Burkholder said he used to plow between 30 to 50 garden plots for people in the county every spring, but that’s dwindled over time.

“The last few years it’s been down to four or six,” Burkholder said. “Without having gardens, we don’t have vendors. Our farmer’s market was originally for local people, not necessarily farmers, to come and have a place to sell what they have extra.”

The Greene County Ruritan Club managed the space, and did not charge the farmers to use the space.
